Every Coating Starts With the Slab

Ask what makes a floor last and the honest answer is underneath it. Coatings rarely fail on their own — bonds fail, and the bond is decided before any product goes down. That’s why concrete repair and surface preparation is the foundation service at Inland Epoxy. It’s built into every garage floor coating we install, and it’s available on its own when your slab needs work but a coating isn’t in the plan. We make the full case in why surface preparation matters, but the short version is simple: the prep you can’t see decides how long the floor you can see holds up.

Diamond Grinding, Not Acid Etching

We prepare every slab by diamond grinding. A planetary grinder with diamond tooling, run with vacuum dust extraction, removes laitance — the weak, powdery layer that forms on top of cured concrete — along with old sealers, paint splatter and contamination. What’s left is clean, open concrete with a consistent profile a coating can key into.

Acid etching is the shortcut, and we don’t use it. Acid can’t cut through sealers or adhesive residue, it leaves salts behind that interfere with adhesion, and it soaks the slab with rinse water right before the surface needs to be dry. Peeling coatings and hot-tire pickup almost always trace back to a floor that was etched, or simply cleaned, instead of ground. Grinding takes real equipment and more labor, and it’s the difference between a coating that sits on concrete and one that becomes part of it.

Crack, Spall and Pit Repair

Concrete cracks — that’s what a slab does after decades of hot Inland Empire summers and the slow settling of the ground beneath it. Hairline shrinkage cracks are normal in almost every garage. What matters is treating each defect correctly instead of burying it:

• Cracks are chased out with a crack-chasing wheel to remove weak edges, filled with a rigid repair polymer, and ground flush.
• Spalls and pits are cut back to sound concrete, filled with repair mortar and leveled so the patch disappears into the finished floor.
• Surface damage like scaling, pop-outs and gouges is ground down or filled depending on its depth.

We see the full range of slab conditions, from tract garages in Rancho Cucamonga built in the 1980s and 1990s to slabs under older homes in Claremont that have been carrying cars for generations. Every repair gets matched to the defect — there’s no one-size patch.

Joints, Edges and the Details

Control joints are cut into a slab to manage cracking, and they deserve a decision rather than neglect. Depending on the floor and how you’ll use it, we either fill joints flush with a semi-rigid filler for a smooth, easy-to-sweep surface or keep them crisp and coat through them. Expansion joints that isolate the slab from footings and walls stay flexible so the concrete can keep moving the way it was designed to. Edges, thresholds and garage-door transitions get detailed by hand. None of this is glamorous, but it’s where a floor either looks finished or doesn’t.

Moisture and Older Slabs

Concrete transmits water vapor from the ground beneath it, and a coating can trap that vapor at the bond line. Newer slabs usually went down over a plastic vapor barrier; many older ones didn’t. In the older neighborhoods of Upland and Pomona we pay particular attention to damp spots, whitish mineral deposits and any earlier coating that blistered — all signs that moisture is moving through the slab. When it is, we adjust the system: a moisture-tolerant primer or vapor-barrier coat goes down first, or, if the slab isn’t a good candidate, we tell you before you spend money on a floor that won’t hold. Checking costs little. Skipping the check can cost the whole floor.

When Repair Alone Is the Right Call

Not every slab needs a coating, and we don’t push one. Repair-only work makes sense when a rental or workshop just needs to be safe and functional, when trip hazards need grinding down, or when the budget says fix the concrete now and coat it later — our guide to epoxy flooring costs is a useful read if you’re planning in stages. When a future coating is on the table, we repair with compatible materials so the work counts twice. And if a slab is too far gone for honest repair, we’ll say so plainly instead of coating over a problem.
